Migration to SAP S/4 HANA
SAP S/4 HANA is the latest-generation SAP ERP system, the successor to SAP ERP (SAP ECC, R/3).
SAP has announced the end of maintenance of SAP ECC by end 2027 and more than 60,000 Enterprises around the Word must migrate by then.
Plenty of terminology is flying around, with different terms that mean the same thing, similar but unrelated words, and overlapping definitions.
All of these make understanding the language of SAP projects tougher than it needs to be and the journey to SAP S/4 HANA seems to be unclear, overly complicated, risky, and confusing.

Migration from SAP ERP to SAP S/4 HANA is possible in various ways, different approaches, and methodologies, with extensive manual effort or using software to automate manual procedures.
The choice for adopting the optimal migration path depends on many factors:
Up till recently, there were only two approaches available for businesses commonly known as:
- Greenfield
Deploy the new system from scratch and start using the new SAP S/4HANA features and technologies, with no historical data available. This is the selected approach to migration to SAP S/4HANA for companies that need a completely new business processes and functions, significantly different from the current system.
Reimplementation requires specific time, costs, development of a strategy for production starts.
The cost of deploying a greenfield to SAP S/4HANA implementation will be higher than other approaches.
- Brownfield
Convert existing SAP functionalities and data to the new SAP S/4HANA technology platform using SAP Solution Manager. In this approach, migration means technical upgrade to S/4HANA, and implementation of new functions is carried out in the subsequent steps. This is the selected approach for low and medium complexity SAP environments.
This is a typical conversion of an existing SAP ECC system (as-is), to SAP S/4HANA, in fact, is keep the same structure, improve performance.
Configuration and extension changes are made only in situations that are required by SAP S/4HANA.
The main risk associated with this approach is the longtime of unavailability of the production system.
A brownfield migration is less costly since there are no changes in the business processes.
- Selective Data Transition (SDT)
SAP has realised that a binary selection of SAP S/4HANA migration options does not provide the flexibility required by most of the SAP ECC customers.
SAP has teamed up with SNP, CBS and Natuvion to create the SAP S/4 HANA Selective Data Transition Engagement called SNP Bluefield™ , CBS Orange, Natuvion Hybrid, offering to SAP customers the ability to realise value from their deployments to SAP S/4HANA with even greater speed and agility.
Selective Data Transition allows SAP customers to achieve effects unavailable with other SAP S/4HANA migration strategies in a shorter time and at a lower cost, with a low risk of errors.
